Activities for Children in Somerset

There are many activities for children in Somerset, many of these are equally fun for the parents!

No family visiting Somerset should miss the delights of Wookey Hole. Set in the stunning Cheddar Gorge, Wookey Hole and the other caves at Cheddar were created by the action of the water on the limestone. The caves are lit up to create a wonderfully eerie atmosphere. Evidence has shown that that the caves were inhabited as far back as the Stone age. The legend is that Wookey Hole is haunted by a witch which adds to the spookiness of the caves. There are all sorts of fun activities for children in this area many of them undercover, making this a great all weather attraction.

Another great day out can be had at the Wildlife Park at Cricket St Thomas, near Chard. the Wildlife Park is set in the grounds of a wonderful 19th Century Manor House, which was the centrepiece of the telelvision series "To the Manor Born", which starred Penelope Keith and Peter Bowles. The Wildlife Park has around 600 animals, most visable at very close quarters. There is also a safari railway, children's farm, mini rides, and play area.

There are many activities for children in Somerset, particularly in and around the seaside resorts of Weston-Super-Mare and Minehead. Here children can enjoy a donkey ride on the beach, funfair rides, or simply building sandcastles, and paddling in the sea, on the award winning sandy beaches.

The Grand Pier at Weston-Super-Mare has all sorts of fun and entertainment for all the family in a fabulous covered amusement park over the sea. Further along the Marine parade you can find the SeaQuarium, where children can appreciate the variety of sealife creatures that live in the oceans. The seaside resort of Minehead also has many similar attactions, from here you can take a ride on the fabulous West Somerset Railway, the longest heritage railway in England. You can also take advantage of a day pass to all the activities at the Butlins resort.

Older children and adults alike will be enthalled by the aircraft on display at the Fleet Air Army Museum in Yeovilton, 7 miles from Yeovil. Here you have the chance to get on board Concorde and view many other aircraft close up.

Throughout Somerset there are many Animal Farm Parks. As well as allowing the opportunity for children to handle and pet the amimals, most have other activities for children, such as tractor rides, falconry displays, maize mazes, and adventure playgrounds. Just two possibilities are Court Farm Country Park south of Weston-Super-Mare, or Animal Farm Adventure Park near Burnham-on-Sea.

There are a number of museums which offer an insight into the Somerset of bygone days. In Glastonbury the Rural Life Museum offers an insight into Somerset farm History, and the Peat Moors Centre displays a full-size reconstruction of two Iron Age roundhouses from Glastonbury Lake Village. The more recent past can be explored at the North Somerset Museum on Burlington Street, Weston-Super-Mare. Taunton Castle houses the county museum. There are many other local museums to visit elsewhere in the Somerset.

During the summer months you can enjoy the fabulous open air swimming pool at the village of Street, the village is famous for shoe manufacturing and is home to the Clarks Village Shopping Centre. The South-West's largest fun park can be found at Brean on the Somerset coast. Here there are 40 rides and attractions, a pool complex with four water slides, bars and restaurants.

Also at Brean is the Brean Down Bird Garden, where you can see tropical birds found throughout the world.

Most of the main towns have leisure centres offering a variety of sports and leisure activities for all the family. Alternatively you may consider hiring bikes to explore Somerset's stunning countryside.

Whatever your family's interests you will be spoilt for choice with all the activities for children in Somerset.
