Weston-super-Mare Operatic Society
Weston-super-Mare Operatic Society is one hundred years old this year and in celebration we are presenting an exciting series of events.

In the spring, “The Secret Garden”, a musical based on the famous children’s book by Frances Hodgson Burnett will be performed at the Playhouse from 26th – 29th March and will open with a Gala evening on the 26th March at The Royal Hotel in Weston-super-Mare. Tickets are available now at the Playhouse box office.

Following this production the Society is holding two events at their own premises known as St Judes Theatre in Grove Road, Milton, Weston-super-Mare.

The first event being held on 16th – 18th May 2008 at St Judes Theatre is called Weston super Musical Sing-a-Long. The audience is invited to join in with much loved favourites from popular musicals.
Nona and Bill Clout, two of Weston’s much loved entrepreneurs have been asked to help the Society present the second event at St Judes Theatre from the 27th – 29th June called ‘The Centenary Cabaret Show’. This will be an opportunity to remember and celebrate 100 years of musical shows which the society has staged both at the old Knightstone Theatre and subsequently at The Playhouse Theatre in Weston-super-Mare. It will feature many of the songs that the society has performed and promises to be full of nostalgia. The Society invites all past members to make contact and join them on this special occasion.
Laura G. James and Annie Doswell, two of the Society’s young and talented members are directing our junior section, the “Oppitts” who will present a junior version of “Guys and Dolls” at the Blakehay Theatre, Weston-super-Mare from the 31st July – 2nd August.. We are currently looking for 10 – 14 year olds to join us in this venture, and details can be obtained from assistant secretary Margaret on 07753 471900 or by visiting our website www.westonoperatic.org.uk.
A pig roast and family fun day is planned for August. Watch out for more details……….

A Centenary Masked Ball is to be held on September 13th at the Winter Gardens Pavilion in Weston-super-Mare. There will be a Celebrity Hosted Auction, Live Music, Media and Theatre Raffle, Champagne Raffle, Three Course Meal with Wine and a handsome prize for the best ‘Themed Table’. Tickets cost £39 and can be ordered via our website on the Centenary page. We invite the readers to support this event and bring their friends to enjoy a spectacular evening.
The year will conclude with a centenary production of “The Pirates of Penzance”, directed by Ray Jeffery to run from the 29th October and finishing with a gala night at the final performance on 1st November at the Playhouse Theatre in Weston-super-Mare. It was thought appropriate to stage this particular Gilbert & Sullivan operetta as it was the first production ever staged by the Society in 1909.
Look out for other events during the year.
