Accommodation
Exmoor House has five spacious en suite bedrooms: three twin/doubles (can be either), a double and a family room which sleeps four. All the double beds are either king or superking size.
We provide hairdryers, tea & coffee making facilities, even hot water bottles!
Each room is individually decorated using bright, contemporary colours. Some of the rooms have a bath, others a shower: let us know your preference at the time of booking and we will do what we can to give you what you want. Like the rest of Exmoor House, all our bedrooms are strictly non-smoking.
Breakfast
At Exmoor House, we make a point of using quality ingredients. Top-notch sausages and dry-cured bacon, local free-range eggs, decent fruit juice rather than the concentrate stuff, Dartmouth kippers, proper coffee, toasted home-made bread, home-made preserves, farmhouse butter... you know the sort of thing.
Evening Meals
Dinner at Exmoor House is something special. In our daily-changing menu the emphasis is on imaginative yet unfussy cooking with good ingredients - wherever possible we make use of local, seasonal produce. You can see some sample menus on our website. Let us know any dietary needs/preferences when you make your booking and we'll do our best to help.
To complement your meal we offer an interesting range of reasonably priced wines from around the world. If beer’s more your thing, we stock a range of bottled beers from local brewers Exmoor Ales and Cotleigh, including Exmoor Gold and Barn Owl. And being in Somerset, there are always a few local ciders within reach, such as Sheppy’s.
Local Area
The area around Wheddon Cross is fantastic for walking and cycling. There are also numerous other places well worth a visit within a half-hour drive of the village: for example the National Trust-owned Holnicote Estate (more great walks); Porlock Weir, a quiet backwater that is just right for a summer’s day; medieval Dunster, with its castle perched high on a hill; Dulverton, a pretty little town beside the River Barle; Winsford Hill, another National Trust owned piece of moorland with fantastic views.
The Coleridge Way
We are very close to the route of the Coleridge Way, the 36-mile long-distance trail that links Nether Stowey in the Quantocks to Porlock on Exmoor. If you’re tackling the Coleridge Way, why not save your legs for the final push to Porlock and enjoy a rest day (and two nights) at Exmoor House, perhaps taking in a Land Rover safari (we will be happy to help arrange one for you) or enjoying the Exmoor open-top bus ride which you can pick you up from virtually outside our door on most Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout the summer. We can help you arrange a baggage transfer to Porlock, as long as you let us know in advance.
