Description

The Talbot Inn is at the heart of Mells, a place which seems to be England in a pint-pot. History, tradition, the great English arts and folklore shape this beautiful little village - described as ‘the quintessence of Albion’ by the Independent newspaper.

The Inn itself has been welcoming travellers since the 15th Century, when it was built as a rest stop for coaches running the London to Wells road.

Just a short drive from Bath, Longleat, Glastonbury, Wells, Centre Parcs and the area’s other major attractions, the Talbot Inn makes an ideal getaway for a long weekend, or a base for exploring this fascinating region.

Walkers on the Mendip Hills, cyclists on Colliers Way and golfers at Orchardleigh will find plenty to keep them busy, or you can just take it easy with a pint of gravity-fed real ale in our historic Tythe Barn bar, or enjoy a selection from our award-winning menu.

We also have a beautiful garden and cobbled courtyard in which to dine al fresco and enjoy sunny days.

In the top 50 for UK Pubs

The Talbot Inn was listed in the independent’s ‘Essential Guide to Going Out’ as one of the 50 best pubs in the country.

DINING AT THE TALBOT INN

An occasion to be cherished, offering an award-winning a la carte menu of traditional English food with a delicate French influence, sourced from the best local ingredients.

The informal restaurant offers a backdrop of extremes with low oak beams and ceiling hops the alternative to a front room that would grace any country house hotel.

Head chef Mark Jones was classically trained via Switzerland and London and previously worked at the internationally renowned Gidleigh Park Hotel.

Our overnight guests are served a freshly cooked English breakfast, whilst the Talbot’s Sunday lunch has become a Mells institution.

The Tythe Barn Bar

The old Tythe barn has been tastefully restored to its former glory and now houses the inn’s public bar.

Five hundred year old beams infilled with lathe and plaster look down on lime-washed rough stone walls and a pine floor strewn with odd tables and chairs.

Behind the bar, a range of keg beers and lagers support real cask conditioned ale which is served direct from the barrel in full view of the recipient

Painted behind the bar is a recently commissioned mural by local artists Fleur Kelly and Diana Byrne.

Accommodation available also - beautiful rooms.

Traditional comforts and modern convenience combine to make the Talbot Inn the ideal place for a relaxing weekend break or a base for exploring the beautiful countryside and historic towns and villages around Somerset and Bath.

All our rooms are named after characters from the history of Mells - from Little Jack Horner to the poet Siegfried Sassoon.
