The City of Wells and Surrounding Areas
Wells is a medieval city nestling on the southern side of the Mendip Hills with the Somerset Levels stretching away to the south and west. The history of Wells goes right back to Roman times when we know that there was a settlement, probably because of the springs that bubble up here. Wells gets its name from these springs which can today be found in the gardens of the Bishop's Palace.
Although it is only the size of a small town with just over 12,000 inhabitants, Wells can call itself a city because of the famous 13th century Wells Cathedral. It remains remarkably unspoilt and has many other beautiful buildings including the moated Bishop's Palace, Vicars' Close, St Cuthbert's Church and a good local museum. The Wells Market Place, with lively markets twice a week, narrow streets and an eclectic mix of building styles all reflect on the continuing development of the town throughout the ages.

Wells is an ideal destination for a short break or long weekend and has much to see in it as well as providing a base for exploring the surrounding area. Within 20 miles you can visit Bath, Bristol, Glastonbury and many other historic towns. Other nearby attractions include the famous caves at Wookey Hole, Cheddar Gorge & Caves, the Mendip Hills, Glastonbury Abbey and Tor with the mystic Somerset Levels all around.

This website is set up as a one-stop shop for all the information you will need. Most of the hotels and B&Bs in Wells are listed along with many restaurants. There is a helpful section on how to travel to Wells as well as a map of the city and an Area Planning map.
We hope you will come and visit us soon.
