Our History

Wincanton is thought to have been the scene of the earliest steeplechases ever held. Matches between hunting folk were a feature of the areas countryside and by the commencement of the 19th Century, Easter Monday at Wincanton had become a recognised fixture. The course at this time was at Hatherleigh Farm, South West of Wincanton town and it wasn't until 1925 that the course moved to its present location at Kingwell Farm.

Excellent Jump Racing

Wincanton Racecourse hosts 17 fixtures of quality jump racing from October to May and has an average of two meetings per month during this period. Eight of these race days are on a weekend or bank holiday so if you are planning a day out these meetings provide an excellent day that is packed full of entertainment.

Other feature racedays in April are Countryside Day the 20th which includes terrier racing and ferret racing, and ladies on the 29th, so if you don't back a winner on the horses why not try the ferrets. For spring entertainment the evening meeting on May 8th provides excitement music and fun.

Whilst relaxing with friends why not stop and visit one of the seven bars for a drink, or maybe a bite to eat. The Seemore Business Bar offers a selection of seafood ranging from Hot Fish Soup to a smoked salmon platter, or The Stalbridge Bar offers more traditional food with home made cottage pie, pasties, sandwiches and cakes. For more formal dining why not reserve a table in one of our restaurants and enjoy a three course meal in style.
